Technical- & site assessment of a 70 MW to 250 MW solar power plant facility

Description of the project:

Anglo American has embarked on a global drive to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuel with the deployment of renewable power solutions.  In response to this requirement, Kumba Iron Ore (KIO) has approached the market through a request for an expression of interest to identify a partner to participate in an SPV for the delivery of a solar power generation facility located in the Northern Cape of South Africa.  KIO is planning to meet the mines’ base load energy requirement of between 70 and 130 MW.

KIO is in the process of adjudicating these submissions, to select the preferred bidders.  The preferred bidders will then be approached in quarter 2 of 2021 with the request for proposal for the supply of this power.

In preparation of this bid for submission to the bidders, KIO appointed EPCM to conduct a technical solution for the project.

KIO has identified several viable sites where these solar farms could be established.  These sites are in the vicinities of both Sishen Mine and Kolomela Mine, over which KIO has property rights
