EPCM in collaboration with Volco completed a feasibility study for Tronox to convert their mining plant utilized at the Namakwa Sands complex from Diesel to LNG. This feasibility study also included converting the LPG burners at their Koekenaap processing facility to LNG burners. The feasibility study included a complete process heat integration review to optimize the energy use at the two facilities to minimize the capital outlay impact of the required conversions required over the two sites.
The feasibility study was found to be very favorable and the possible savings were substantial, sadly the failings to secure the necessary approvals from TNPA and the government to import the LNG through Saldanha has currently halted the project.
