Kingshurst Consultants (Pty) Ltd contracted EPCM to design a skeletal frame with the same dimensions as a 20-foot ISO container that can be used to transport composite CNG cylinders.
The structure was designed in accordance with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG). The manifold system, designed for quick loading and emptying flow rates, enables two containers to be connected in parallel should the semi-trailer payload allow it.
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is transported in high-pressure cylinders at pressures between 250 and 300 barg. Various types of steel and composite materials have been developed for storing CNG. Cylinders made from steel are least expensive with the heaviest tare weight. Composite material cylinders are more expensive with a lighter tear weight. An advantage of composite materials is the expanding / contracting capabilities to handle constant length changes during fueling.
- EPCM will continue to design various sized structures for Kingshurst that can be used for the transportation of CNG from a micro scale (towing a trailer behind a vehicle), to a large scale (having a single large container on a semi-trailer).
